Cattle heart girth weight calculator
No scale? Pull a heart girth tape, measure body length, and estimate live cattle weight with the Schaeffer formula — girth squared times length, divided by 300.
How to tape a cow
Heart girth is the circumference just behind the front legs, up over the withers. Stand her square on level ground. Tape snug, not strangling, and read inches. A flexible measuring tape is enough — you do not need a printed cattle weight tape.
Length is shoulder point to pin bone, also inches. Keep the tape level along the side, not sagging under the belly. Schaeffer is girth² × length ÷ 300. If the tape is in centimeters, convert to inches before you punch the form. Mud, hair, and a gut full of water will lie to you. It beats guessing. It is not a sale-barn scale.
Worked example: girth and length to live weight
Heart girth 70 in, body length 60 in: 70² × 60 ÷ 300 = 980 lb live. Leave dressing at the tool’s 62% default and hanging weight is about 608 lb (980 × 0.62). Example only — punch your tape numbers in the calculator.
Same formula, a little more frame: 72 in girth by 62 in length is about 1,071 lb live, and about 664 lb hanging at 62% dressing percent.
Tape chart vs Schaeffer
A printed calf weight tape chart is usually girth only — one mark on a cloth tape, one weight. This calculator wants girth and length (Schaeffer). Handy when all you have in the pasture is a plain measuring tape and no scale.
After you have a weight
Tape weight is a planning number. For locker beef, take the live estimate to the freezer beef calculator and finish hanging and take-home pounds. For a calf on the ground, 205-day weaning weight levels age so one calf can sit next to another.
Questions
Where do you measure heart girth on a cow?
Just behind the front legs / shoulder, all the way around the chest with the tape snug but not choking.
Is heart girth tape weight exact?
It’s an estimate for ranch decisions, not a sale weight. Condition and gut fill move the number.
What units does the calculator use?
Inches for girth and length, pounds for the estimate — convert cm before you punch it in.
Is this the same as a calf weight tape chart?
Same idea — heart girth to weight — but this uses girth and body length (Schaeffer) instead of a printed tape. Handy when you only have a measuring tape.
How does the Schaeffer heart girth formula work?
Estimated live weight (lb) = heart girth (in)² × body length (in) ÷ 300. Example: 70 in girth and 60 in length is 70² × 60 ÷ 300 = 980 lb. Optional dressing % estimates hanging weight.
What heart girth and length should I enter?
Girth: circumference just behind the front legs, snug. Length: shoulder point to pin bone. Both in inches.
Can I get hanging weight from the tape?
Yes — fill Dressing % (or leave blank for the tool’s 62% default). Hanging is about live × dressing. For package planning, continue on the freezer beef calculator.
Why doesn’t this match the sale barn?
Tape weight is a ranch estimate. Condition, gut fill, and hair move the number. It is not a legal scale.
Do I need a special cattle weight tape?
No. A flexible measuring tape in inches works. Printed calf charts are girth-only; this calculator wants girth and length.
Planning only. Schaeffer: weight lb = girth² × length / 300, measurements in inches. A tape is not a legal scale.
