Cows per bull calculator
Yearlings cover fewer cows. Tight traps cover more. Short seasons need more bulls.
Worked example: 60 cows, mature pasture
60 cows on the mature pasture preset (30 cows per bull) needs 2 bulls. That is ceil(60 ÷ 30). If Bulls you have is 1, you are short. Example only — punch your cow count in the calculator.
Yearling vs a small trap
Same 60 cows with yearlings at 18 cows per bull needs 4 bulls — ceil(60 ÷ 18). Same 60 in a mature small trap at 40 still needs 2 — ceil(60 ÷ 40) is 2, not 1. Age and paddock size change the battery. Override cows per bull if your bull does not match the preset.
Breeding-season hand-off
This page is natural service: how many bulls to turn out. A short season means more cows cycling while each bull is working, so many ranchers run a heavier battery than a long season — override cows per bull downward if yours is short. If you AI and you already know the breed date, due dates belong on the calving calculator. Acres and grass pressure sit on stocking rate. The calves you get next year get leveled on 205-day weaning weight.
Questions
How many cows per bull?
A common pasture thumb is about 25–30 cows per mature bull. This calculator defaults to 30 for a mature bull on pasture. Health, heat, and pasture size beat any table.
Does age of the bull change the ratio?
Yes. Form presets are about 18 cows for a yearling, 25 for a 2-year-old, 30 for a mature bull on pasture, and 40 in a small trap. The planning note uses yearling ~15–20 and mature ~25–30. Override cows per bull if your bull doesn’t match.
What about pasture breeding vs AI?
This tool is natural service: how many bulls the cow herd needs on pasture or in a small trap. AI is a known breeding date, not a bull-to-cow ratio — date those cows on the calving calculator.
How many bulls do I need for 60 cows?
Depends on bull class. At the mature pasture default (30 cows/bull) you need 2. With yearlings (~18) you’d need 4. Use the calculator with your cow count and class.
What if I already know how many bulls I have?
Enter Bulls you have. The tool shows your actual cows/bull and whether you’re short of the planned battery.
Why do short breeding seasons need more bulls?
A tighter turnout window means more cows cycling while each bull is working — many ranchers run a heavier battery than a long season. Override cows/bull downward (more bulls) if your season is short.
Is pasture the same as a small trap?
No. Presets use about 30 cows/bull on pasture and about 40 in a small trap for a mature bull. Big rough country usually needs a lighter load than a small trap.
Is this a breeding-soundness exam?
No. Planning ratios only. A breeding-soundness exam, health, and heat still decide whether a bull belongs in the battery.
Planning only. Common pasture thumbs: yearling ~15–20, mature ~25–30. Health, heat, and pasture size beat any table. Not a breeding-soundness exam.
