Cattle gestation and calving date calculator
Figure a cow’s calving due date from breeding or bull turnout. Default beef gestation is 283 days — adjust breed length, then plan the calving window instead of guessing off the calendar.
Default is 283 days, same chart the Angus and Hereford associations publish. On this place we use it for the cow bunch (Cinnamon, Sugar, Pumpkin, Coco) with Tony as the bull. East Texas heat means we plan spring calves, not July babies. One cow or the whole season: punch the AI date or the target calving window and you get breed-by and bull-out dates. Pair it with stocking, the glossary, 205-day weaning, and cattle weight from heart girth. Not a pregnancy diagnosis.
Worked example: AI date to a due date
One known breed date is one planning due date, not a season. The date already in the form, 2026-03-15, plus the beef default of 283 days, lands on 2026-12-23. The calculator also prints a ±4 day band, 2026-12-19 through 2026-12-27, because a real cow does not hit the chart on the nose.
Example only — punch your own date. Set I have to Breeding / AI date → due date, leave breed on standard beef (or pick hers), and hit Calculate.
Worked example: bull turnout to a calving window
A bull is not an AI date. Turn him in 2026-05-01 and pull him 2026-07-01 on a 283-day chart and the planning window runs from 2027-02-08 (early February) through 2027-04-10 (early April). May 1 to July 1 is 61 days on that chart. The season-length box defaults to 60, which would pull him a day earlier (2026-06-30) and close the window on 2027-04-09. Same ±4 day slack the tool uses puts the edges around 2027-02-04 through 2027-04-14 for the 61-day example. Planning window, not a promise.
Season mode on the form runs backward from the calf. Set I have to Calving season → bull in / out. For this example, put the first calving date (2027-02-08) in Date, leave gestation at 283, and set season length to 61. Calculate should show bull in 2026-05-01 and bull out 2026-07-01. Example only — punch your dates.
The AI example above is one breed day and one due date. Turnout is a window. Same 283-day rule either way.
283 days, and when breed length changes it
Most beef cows on this page start at 283 days — the chart the American Angus Association and the American Hereford Association publish, and the one UF/IFAS lists with them. The breed menu is that list. Override days is there when your vet or a chart you trust says otherwise. Real gestations run shorter or longer. This is not a preg check.
| Breed on the calculator | Days |
|---|---|
| Standard beef, Angus, Hereford | 283 |
| Holstein, Jersey | 279 |
| Brangus | 286 |
| Simmental, Charolais, Limousin | 289 |
| Brahman | 292 |
Leave Override days blank to use the row you picked. Type a number from 250 to 320 if you need a different length.
Planning the season on this place
East Texas heat is why we aim for spring calves, not July babies. A cow calving into that heat, then trying to breed back in it, has a harder summer than a late-winter calf. Once the due date or the window is on paper, the rest is feed, how many cows that bull can cover, and what you grab when the light comes on at 2 a.m.
After you know the due date
The date starts the plan. Level the calf later with 205-day weaning weight. Size winter and lactation hay on the hay calculator before the stack runs out. Check cows per bull if one bull is covering more cows than he should. Before the first one hits the ground, print the kit on calving night — what to tap through at 2 a.m. It ends in wait or call the vet.
Questions
How long is a cow pregnant?
About 283 days for most beef cows. Dairy and some breeds run a little shorter or longer — change the gestation length in the calculator.
How do I date a calving season from bull turnout?
Add your gestation length to the turnout date for the first due dates, then use bull removal date to close the calving window.
What’s the difference between AI date and bull exposure?
AI is a single known breeding date. Bull exposure is a range — use turnout and pull-out dates so you get a season, not one day.
What is a normal cow gestation length?
Most beef cows run about 283 days. Dairy breeds on this list (Holstein and Jersey) run a bit shorter, 279. Brangus is 286, Simmental, Charolais, and Limousin are 289, and Brahman is 292. Use that breed list or Override days.
How do I get a calving due date from an AI date?
Choose Breeding / AI date → due date, enter the AI date and breed length (default 283), then Calculate. You get a single planning due date, not a multi-week season.
How is bull turnout different from AI for dating calves?
AI is one known breeding day. Bull turnout is a range, so you get a calving window. Use Calving season → bull in / out: enter the first calving date and the season length (the box defaults to 60) and the calculator backs out bull-in and bull-out.
Can I plan backward from a target calving date?
Yes. Use Target calving date → breed-by to see when to AI or turn the bull out if you want calves around a chosen date.
Does breed change the due date?
Yes. Pick Angus or Hereford (283), Holstein or Jersey (279), Brangus (286), Simmental, Charolais, or Limousin (289), or Brahman (292). Type Override days if your vet or association chart differs.
Is this a pregnancy diagnosis?
No. This is planning only off published gestation charts. Confirm pregnancy with your vet. Real calving dates run shorter or longer than the chart.
Planning only. 283-day charts: American Angus Association, American Hereford Association, UF/IFAS. Real gestations run shorter or longer. Not a pregnancy diagnosis.
