Donkey pair in the open lot

Earlier
Morning the coop held chickens everywhere, blacks gathered in a bunch on the shavings and whites perched up high, one dark bird standing at the edge. A little later three of them were out standing by the wire, a black and two whites on the needles. Across the way a brown cow from Virgil's bunch stood still among the pine trees. Virgil and Zander had their space, the pair of donkeys with one of them standing right out in the middle of the straw-covered lot, like he had all the time in the world.
Later
Later that afternoon the barn was empty. No animals at all, just the hanging lamp over a dirt floor scattered with needles.
